Utopia Festival: Celebrating Women in Digital Culture!

****I’m helping to organize this event as a volunteer, so any endorsement on my part is unpaid and totally out of love for w2!***

W2 is proud to present UTOPIA FESTIVAL: a premier 100th Anniversary International Women’s Day event at W2 Storyeum on March 5, 2011.

The Utopia Festival will empower women in the electronic arts with radical, hands-on education through lectures, discussion groups and workshops during this all-day program. The festival was conceived as an intervention into the male dominated electronic music scene in Vancouver and digital culture worldwide. The celebration will culminate in an exciting musical showcase featuring the largest line-up of women in electronic music in Western Canada with net proceeds supporting the W2 Inner-City Girls’ Creative Tech Summer Camp.

“By connecting world-class artists with local women music makers or those considering careers in digital culture, Utopia Festival is taking crucial steps in bridging the so-called digital divide along gender lines,” states Maren Hancock, Utopia Festival’s curator and a successful DJ and musician pursuing a PhD in gender and DJ culture.
The daytime program is open to 150 women ages 13 and up and runs from 10am – 8pm.  Headlining DJ’s, musicians, and video artists from the musical showcase will lend their experience to the production workshops, panel discussions, and the conference, which are all designed to break down the barriers for women in electronic music and digital arts. The conference will be exclusive to women, with men welcome for the evening portion of the event. Also open to the public is the Mobile Street Party, an impromptu flashmob-style dance event, which will join up with the International Women’s Day parade on Commercial Drive to celebrate music, dance and the power of women.

Everyone is invited to the evening showcase from 10pm – 4am, featuring musical performances by:

Peaches (Berlin), Tanya Tagaq (NWT), Isis Salam (Thunderheist/Toronto), B-Traits (YVR/London), Betti Forde (Toronto/YVR), Librarian (YVR), Lynx (Oakland), Zenobia, (YVR), She (YVR), Blondtron (YVR), DJ Veronica (YVR), Lady Lane (Brooklyn/YVR), & Tank Girl (YVR).  Media artists include: VJ Electrabelle, Julie Gendron, Sebnem Ozpeta, Claudia Medina and Krista Lomax.

W2 is a globally networked community media arts centre in Vancouver’s DTES (Downtown Eastside). W2’s permanent home will open in April 2011 with 8,800 sq ft in the Woodward’s heritage building at Abbott and Hastings. The new location will include a 200-capacity networked broadcasting studio, community TV station, community FM radio station, social enterprise café, media lab, creative technology incubator, letterpress studio, tele-presence and mobile media programs, and more.
